Definitely want four of these!
Essential Zaku for the everyday Zeon Loyalist. If you are a budding gunpla hobbyist or a Zeon Nationalist, this kit is for you. Look no further, as this product is ideal for starting to intermediate hobbyist Gunpla (Gundam Plastic Model) builders, requiring only nippers and files to remove and smooth out the nubs. I can not recommend this kit enough for those looking to start in this hobby or those looking to sharpen their skills without the need to use specialized tools.
The criteria I have used is the following:
As for affordability the Zaku 1 (Kycilia) is one of those kits that will not burn a hole in your wallet. It costs about $20 which is the average price of HG Origin Kits. For its price range, it comes with several accessories that make the price worth it. These accessories include the machine gun, bazooka, heathawk, and shield. In addition, there are some extra parts that the kit comes with that allows you to convert this kit to another variant, which is a rarity is most kits. The extra parts are not only what makes this kit a great but the amount of detail in the armor, the ever-present mono-eye and the engravings stand out despite being just an HG kit. These features like details and extra parts do give this kit the most bang for your buck. The only thing missing from this kit is the anti-ship rifle that the default Zaku - I come with, of course, this is replaced with a shield instead which highlights its CQC (Close Quarter Combat) role in the UC universe.
The kit is far more articulate compared to previous Zaku kits. Like many other Origin Kits, it sports the moveable mono-eye, double bending arms that allow for a variety of poses that is simply not possible in older kits. There are a few lacking features like the lack of a bend in the hip that allows for an abdominal crunch that is present in newer kits. The machine gun gets in the way of the poseability. The signature heat-hawk is loose and makes it difficult for poses, as it easily slides out.
There are a few things that hold this otherwise affordable kit back for example; The Zaku machine gun the kit comes with a stock that gets in the way of posing and articulation. The Heathawk still suffers from the same problems as all Zaku kits suffer from; the handle is simply too loose to get a proper grip and slips off easily from the hand. If you have sufficient skill
The manual initially may look intimidating at first glance but the instructions and the pictures are easy to understand. The assembly manual is in Japanese but I was still able to assemble it without understanding Japanese, a proof of ease of assembly. The nubs are designed in a way that most of them are hidden which makes the kit assembly look clean and consistent, a feature absent in older kits.
Because of the Zeon aesthetic, which is based on real world militaries of the past (German WWII), the colors are not flashy, but subdued. In this case because the Zaku is used in the secret police and special ops division in zeon it is colored in varying shades of black and grey. Despite the use of two colors the kit still does look intimidating in its own right with influence taken from the German WII SS forces
Conclusion: If you are a Zeon Nationalist, buy this kit. If not, still buy this kit. For its price, this kit comes with accessories and articulation that most gunpla kits do not have. The aesthetics despite being just different shades of black and grey does make the color and part separation and the details of this kit stand out. You can’t go wrong even when you mistakenly buy this kit.
