More Than A Simple Re-color To get the obvious out of the way, this kit is essentially a recolor of the regular Gundam Local Type, just in a darker color scheme. While the kit is advertised as a black mobile suit, the actual colors for the kit are a variety of dark browns that flow together really nicely, with only a few pieces having the primary black coloring. The joints that were initially a very dark grey on the regular local type kit have been lightened up to help contrast the mostly dark colors of this kit, these ones being a much lighter grey. This allows any panel-lining done on the joint covers to show up much more clearly, something that should absolutely be done while building the kit, as there can be some very hard to reach details if you panel-line the kit after building.
The main feature that catches everyone's eye is more than likely that big ol' cannon on his back. Unfortunately, there are no stickers for the camera lenses like shown on the box, so fluorescent paints/Gundam markers will be needed if you want to give the weaponry that much extra detail. Foil stickers for the kit are pleasantly minimal, and the marking stickers add so much detail to the finished product, though a little hand painting for the orange bordering for the various armor pieces would be an easy opportunity for someone to attempt hand painting if they aren't too proficient with it.
As for articulation, it's the same as the regular Local Type in every way. For the Origin kit lineup, it certainly is baseline for what modern High Grade kits should have. Whether this is a good or bad thing, is entirely up to you. The articulation it does have though is enough to get any poses you could possibly want with it.
For the price of the kit, I'd most certainly say it's a great addition to any collection!
If you missed out on the white RX-18-01 Local type, then this one definitely make up for that lost. The RX-78-01 [N] is the predecessor to the RGM/RX-79 G unit in MS 08th team and other MSV suits in the origins universe. The North American type shouldn't easily be written off as a re-skinned design since the stickers, weapons, and equipment is vastly different than the white P-bandai version. This black gundam of the night comes with not just the standard 100 MM machine gun and small claw shield with beam saber slots, but also two types of back pack and the shoulder cannon.
The pros of this kit is that it is a straight upgrade of the white variation to compensate if you missed out on the P-bandai exclusive or not a die hard collector. This kit has compatibility with other parts and weapons from the other local gundam types , other origins kit, and even the 0083 weapons to my knowledge so far. Articulation for various poses is amazing for a HG kit to stress how awesome it is with its weaponry as a prototype unit for data collection.
The cons beside the stickers needing some tweezers and glue to stay in place is that the Full Scale Development version of this kit is the better upgrade since it comes with a medium retractable shield and arm mounted Gatling gun on top of the already existing equipment and weapons of the North American type.
In conclusion I recommend this kit if you missed the white p bandai version, wanting to build a MS evolution collection, or want spare parts since the Full Scale Development version is the superior version with all the bells and whistle that was missing in other kits.
Great build with a some bumbs I truely loved building this kit. The kit is a solid and I had no problem with putting the Gundam together except for the main backpack. The sockets for all the attachments like the beam saber holders, the cannon, and the gun & shield attachment was extremely loose, since I am a novice builder and don't have any glue on hand, I cannot use it at this time, however there was a backup backpack from the normal Gundam Local type in this suit's color I used that instead and it looks pretty good on it as well (still have a place for 2 beam sabers, gun, and shield, but no cannon).
Still besides all of the backpack hassle I still love this kit. The color is amazing, stickers are not annoying and quite enjoyable to use and makes the suit pop, not to mention the visor was spectacular as well.
