OK everyone, we know this is an awesome suit, but this product's existence is a harbinger of doom. Not only is it the first ever MG kit that was made completely from scratch for the P-Bandai online shop (setting a dangerous precedent), but it also utilizes a frame attachment system that will allow you to combine it with any of TWENTY-SIX equipment packs that are going to be released in the future. Buckle up!

The F90 is back! The most ambitious and essential P-Bandai yet. After almost 30 years, a fan favorite gets a long-overdue refresh, and it's one of the best kits of the year.

When it first appeared in 1990, the F90 was one of Bandai's most ambitious kits, incorporating many of the improvements of the newly launched High Grade line in a larger kit, and an array of hidden connection points to allow for swappable accessories. Bandai released a few variants covering 6 different "loadouts" and then retired the line, seemingly for good. In 2006, Bandai teased a Master Grade, but quietly cancelled it for reasons unknown. Most had given up hope we'd ever get a real refresh of the F90.

Now it's finally here and it's everything I could hope for. The kit is small, comparable to the MG Crossbone or F91, or even the HG/RG Nu Gundam, which might disappoint fans of big kits, but I really love this size. It's a fun, relatively quick build, that has excellent color separation and detail. It looks pretty good straight out of the box but the area around the eyes and the small trapezoids on the foot guards are gray out of the box and need to be painted black to be color accurate. The eye parts are clear as well so you will have to paint them or use the included stickers. Other than that it's nearly perfect out of the box. The decals for the signature triangle waring markings look especially great when applied to the molded surface details.

It's a pretty traditional, manga-accurate refresh but the new proportions are a big improvement. It includes a generous sheet of waterslide decals, including a lot of nice optional ones for customizing the look. It's also just a brick house of a kit, solid, stable, and able to hold a pose like a champ, even with bulky accessories attached.

There aren't a ton of accessories in the box, just the usual beam sabers, shield and beam rifle. The shield is gorgeous, with perfect color separation and some good heft to it. But real fun is going to come in the form of mission packs. Bandai has announced they plan to offer 9 (and possibly as many as 26) different loadouts of specialized accessories to be released in expansion packs. These click into the hidden connection points on the kit and can be mixed and matched to creat your own configurations. Amazingly ambitious, or insane cash grab? A bit of both, really.

And that brings us to the real sticking point here: This kit is released through P-Bandai, and really shouldn't have been.P-Bandai offerings are usually variants, or lower grade kids with cheaper production values. This, on the other hand, is a full fledged MG and uses all new runners (except for the beam sabers of course), had a full color box, a normal manual, and could feels like a retail release. But because of its exclusivity, import prices are double what they would be otherwise. When you factor in similar mark ups for the expansions, you're looking at a lot of money. This kit cannot compare to stuff that retails for $90-$100 and isn't meant to. If you're looking for bang for your buck, look elsewhere. This one is a splurge.

But for me, as a long time fan of the F90, it's well worth it, and it's probably my favorite kit of the year behind the RG Nu Gundam.
