Divisive but worth it With a love or hate it design the G40 provides a no polycap experience and an excellent build for a fantastic finished product. Personally I really enjoy the car based take on my favourite Gundam and you'll find a small design document with the kit for those who want more information. The build is spectacularly smooth and extremely posable. Overall? One of my favourite Gunpla
Quality Ferrari Gundam Personally I'm quite a fan of this unique redesign but apart from the aesthetics what you'll find is a quality build with great plastic feel and excellent colour and colour separation.
Weird, interesting modernist take on the Grandaddy. You'd be forgiven for thinking this is the successor to the G30th, but where that was an attempt to bring the same design language of the MG 3.0 and RG to a HG scale, the G40 is a ground up redesign that embrace a modern industrial design language from Ken Okuyama, best known for his work on sports cars.
At first I kind of hated the design, and it does seem at odds with itself in some ways. It aims to be "realistic" by embracing modernist design cues rather than the classic sci-fi styling, but it's sometimes at odds with itself.
The colors, mostly inherited from the classic design, but dialed up to bright aqua blue, candy red, and lemon yellow, are a bit at odds with this design aesthetic. The lack of gray pieces to express the inner frame also has the effect of making it feel less mechanical. This all combines to make it feel more like an action figure than a mecha model. These things can be addressed to a good extent with a custom paint job, and I found myself wanting to abandon the classic Gundam look to accentuate the modernist features.
It's a super interesting build, borrowing almost nothing from contemporary high grades. Every aspect of this kit feels rethought from the ground up, and a lot of it's new ideas are good, but not all of them feel inherently superior. This kit is capable of very dynamic poses, and it can move in some interesting ways other kits struggle to, but it doesn't necessarily have the most articulation or range of motion in every case. The arm and leg bends are not double jointed and can't quite get the full bend some other kits do, and the double jointed upper leg gives a lot of range but looks very strange in the process. It's a lot of fun to pose and play with though. No polycaps either, so it has a very solid feel and can hold a pose like a champ.
I should also mention, since it doesn't appear in the pictures, that there's a pretty nasty seamline through the middle of the lower arms, and it's logistically difficult to remove if you also want to paint it different colors since this piece has a small bit of rotation. This is probably my least favorite design choice. The rest of the kit hides its seams pretty well.
It's definitely interesting, a refreshing change of pace, and fun to play with. The packaging is nice as well and it comes with a lovely little art book showing concept art and interviews with the designers. The kit is a little pricey for a HG, especially one that doesn't seem to be any larger or more loaded with accessories than any other.
This isn't meant as an ultimate definitive HG of the RX-78-2. There are plenty of other kits to satisfy all tastes, from the new Beyond Global, to the super-detailed Origin version, to the old RG and Revive. This is a concept kit. It's a weird sort of "what if" take, and it's fun for what it is.
Unique Build After waiting half a year to build this I have to say I appreciate its quality much more having put my hands on it. There is no Gunpla like it and I doubt there will be one quite like it any time soon. From the different choice in a springier plastic to the texture of the kit this is something else entirely. I expect this to have a profound effect in future designs.
If it's all same I would rather wait for HG gundam the origin ver this model kit has good articulation and all, but I don't like its leg design, so if it's all same, I will just wait for HG Gundam The Origin Version.
I absolutely love this, the articulation is very unique and only for this model (So far), as it isn't the same grandaddy or unicorn we've seen remade over and over again. I just wish it didn't have a flippin' Red Mowhawk.
